Thought work is life changing. But what is it exactly? To me it means becoming aware of what you're thinking and not letting yourself get carried away with your thoughts.
This can be applied to sticking with your physical therapy home exercise program, consistently using your medications, and even how you think about and feel pain.
We feel the way we feel because of a thought. Think you just won the lottery? You're probably going to feel pretty darn good. (But did you really just win the lottery and have more money in the bank? Maybe not. You just THINK you won so you then FEEL a certain way).
Think you can't get anything done and have no time for yourself? You probably feel overwhelmed. But is that thought true? Can you really and truly not make ANY time for yourself?
Making thought work a daily practice can help you feel the way you want to feel and can help guide your actions (or inactions) and get you results (or not).
On average a person thinks over 60,000 thoughts in one day and are not aware of most of them.
Becoming a curious observer of your thoughts can help you regain control, take action steps and achieve the results you're looking for.
This information isn't new. The basic outline is that things (circumstances) lead to thoughts, which lead to feelings, which lead to action or inaction, which leads to a result.
If you think your physical therapy home program (circumstance) is going to take up a lot of time, making you feel sad, overwhelmed, or anxious, for example, leading to avoiding the information learned and avoiding the homework, this can result in no progress or momentum forward. (Circumstance --> Thought --> Feeling --> Action/Inaction --> Result).
Become aware of how you're thinking about the circumstance (physical therapy home program). What do you want to feel, do and achieve? Do you want to feel excited and motivated? Do you think these feelings will lead to better consistency and completion of the program? Those actions will more than likely lead to the wanted results of improvement/elimination of your issue. Isn't that a much better outcome? Become aware of your thoughts. That is the first step in achieving the things you want to achieve in your life.
Thought work is a bit mind-blowing. Please email me with thoughts and/or questions!
